While a decent number of aquarists choose to keep these snails in a 20-gallon tank, we recommend giving them a little extra room.Īuthor Note: A larger tank will also make it harder for you to accidentally overpopulate your tank! These snails are sensitive to ammonia and nitrate levels, so having a congested tank could do more harm than good. Because of this, they won’t do well in a tiny tank. This species can get pretty big compared to other popular snail species. Tanks of this size will give these snails plenty of room to roam and grow. The recommended minimum tank size for Rabbit Snails is 30 gallons. A lackluster environment could lead to stress, disease, and shell damage. Snails require some specific water conditions to truly thrive. That said, there are some important care guidelines to follow. They are easy-going creatures that do just fine in stable environments. Rabbit Snails care shouldn’t pose much of a challenge (even if you’re a beginner). It won’t take long for them to reach their maximum size! Rabbit Snail Care These creatures have a rather fast growth rate even in captivity. When you first buy them, they’ll be closer to 2 inches in length. The typical size of a Rabbit Snail is 3-5 inches long when fully grown. Unfortunately, it only covered a portion of the aperture. This is a trap door that the snail uses for defense purposes. On their oval-shaped opening, there’s a small operculum. This is often caused by corrosion and physical damage. Though, the groove can become shallower towards the tip as the snail ages. On top of the snail, you can observe individual grooves spiraling around the entire shell. The aperture of the shell is oval-shaped. Think of a unicorn horn! The shell is significantly longer than other species, ending at a fine point. The shape is long, spiraled, and conical. You’ll often see dark-colored shells covered in brown or black. Like their body, it can come in a wide range of colors. The shell of the Rabbit Snail is one of the coolest features. Pair that will the downturned mouth and it’s no wonder these snails have the Elephant Snail nickname. While many snails have smooth and gelatinous skin, that’s not the case with the Rabbit Snail. Their mouths face downward, which helps when they feed on detritus in the substrate. On top of their head, you’ll see two drooping antennae, which give off the appearance of long rabbit ears. They’re aptly named “Rabbit Snails” because of their rabbit-like facial features. These snails do have a distinct look compared to other types of freshwater snails. The primary difference comes down to color. Generally, all Rabbit Snails have similar physical characteristics. For example, there are Black Rabbit Snails, Red Rabbit Snails, and so on. Typically, they’re named after specific coloration of their shells or body. AppearanceĪs we mentioned earlier, there are several types of Rabbit Snails available. During this time, they may retreat into their shell. These snails are known to go through random bouts of rest. A poorly maintained aquarium can cause unnecessary stress that shortens their lifespan significantly, so make sure to stay on top of water conditions!Īuthor Note: If you do see your snail lying on the bottom of the tank motionless, wait a bit before you get concerned. They are particularly sensitive to high ammonia and nitrate levels. Some specimen have even been able to live past 3 years in optimal conditions. Like any other creature you put in your tank, the snails’ life expectancy can vary based on their quality of life. In captivity, the average Rabbit Snail lifespan has been observed to be somewhere between 1 and 3 years. With good water conditions and a healthy diet, these snails can continue to grow and reach their full potential. Regardless of the type of Rabbit Snail you get, it’s important to provide the best care possible. Though, most of their care requirements are the same. There are several individual species available. Technically speaking, the term “Rabbit Snail” refers to a larger genus of freshwater snails. Naturally inquisitive, these snails are not shy and can be seen meandering tanks at all hours of the day!Īlso known as the Elephant Snail (some even call them the Bunny Snail), these critters originally come from Sulawesi, Indonesia. They’re unique snails with some distinct personalities. However, those that are lucky enough to own them usually have nothing but good things to say. They were first introduced to the market around 2007. Rabbit Snails ( Tylomelania) are a relatively new freshwater invertebrate to grace the fish-keeping community. It is available online at and at also at the following retail locations around the Big Bear valley: Butchers Block, Interiors Home Furnishings, Haus & Home Furnishings, Bear Skins, United Wood Craftsmen, Big Bear Discovery Center, Old Country Store, Big Bear Sporting Goods, and the Big Bear Lake Visitors Center. “Vanishing Big Bear-2” is a hardbound 8.5” x 11” book. By 1976 the back lot was in disrepair and bulldozed. It worked as a backdrop for numerous silent films as well as Gone With the Wind. It was actually about 29 acres of land in Culver City, California. The images for this video were provided by the recently published “Vanishing Big Bear-2”, and from the historical collections of Rick Keppler, and Mark Durban. The '40 Acres' back lot was the location where the exterior shots of The Andy Griffith Show were filmed. We also tell of Andy Devine’s important contributions to our Big Bear Lake history. One of the locations Andy used was a popular local restaurant that was once owned by another popular film star Andy Devine, who back in the 1940’s & 1950’s, also made TV shows and movies in Big Bear Lake. Mayberry, North Carolina, is a fictional community that was the setting for two popular American television sitcoms, The Andy Griffith Show (19601968) and Mayberry R.F.D. These movies provide us with a visual record showing how Big Bear Lake has changed over the last forty years. In the 1970’s, actor/entertainer Andy Griffith made a few movies that were filmed almost exclusively at various locations throughout Big Bear Lake. Handey's work next showed up in the Michael Nesmith-produced TV series Television Parts in the format which later became famous on Saturday Night Live (though in Television Parts, Nesmith provided the narration). The crows seemed to be calling his name, thought Caw.If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason. The one-liners were to become Handey's signature work, notable for their concise humor and outlandish hypothetical situations. Additional Deep Thoughts appeared in the October and November 1984 editions, as well as in the short-lived Army Man comedy magazine, while more appeared in 1988 in The Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper. In April 1984, National Lampoon published a piece titled "Deep Thoughts". Handey's "deep thoughts" were first published in an untitled essay in Omni magazine in November 1983. Handey returned to Saturday Night Live in 1985 as a writer. For several years, Handey worked on other television projects: the Canadian sketch series Bizarre in 1980, the 1980 Steve Martin television special Comedy Is Not Pretty!, and Lorne Michaels' short-lived sketch show on NBC called The New Show in 1984. According to Martin, Handey got a job writing for Saturday Night Live (SNL) after Martin introduced him to the show's creator, Lorne Michaels. His first comic writing was with comedian Steve Martin. He lost the job after writing an article that, in his words, "offended local car dealerships". Handey's earliest writing job was for a newspaper, the San Antonio Express-News. Although many assume otherwise, Handey is a real person, not a pen name or character. He is best known for his "Deep Thoughts by Jack Handey", a large body of surrealistic one-liner jokes, as well as his "Fuzzy Memories" and "My Big Thick Novel" shorts, and for his deadpan delivery. Jack Handey (born February 25, 1949) is an American humorist. Today, we claim to know what slavery was but Toni Morrison in her cult novel Beloved shows us that we can’t even be close to grasp that horror. It was a loaded word, weighted down by the bodies and souls of many fought for it and knew that it was the difference between life and death. “anything dead coming back to life hurts.”įreedom as we know today is quite different from what Toni Morrison’s people knew back then. Her most famous and must read novels are “The Bluest Eye” (was banned in some parts of U.S.), “Beloved” (you can find a student review here in this blog), “The Song of Solomon” (said to be one of the favorites of President Obama) and “Sula”.įreeing yourself was one thing claiming ownership of that freed self was another. She generally draws the theme of her books from slavery and they take place in the past but in some novels, she elaborates on racial discrimination in a more recent context. It is totally unfair to reduce such a great author, poet and essayist here in just a single list item, but she is someone you must read. Some of the foremost representatives of Southern Gothic genre you can find in the list below and in our library □ The scenery they use is generally a small town in the middle of vast barren lands, common people with doubts and hostility towards each other and elements of evil either in the form of criminal or supernatural. The South States have a haunted legacy and some authors prefers to draw on the effect of it on everyday life. However, not all Southern Gothic literature is about slavery. This way with these Gothic elements a new Genre of Southern Gothic was born. As most of these slaves came from Africa, they brought with them their religions and cultures which they took refuge against the everyday horrors and this way the African religions, spells and voodoo tradition became a part of the slavery narrative of the South. Thus, the horrors of slavery were mainly linked with these states known for their outrageous treatment of slaves. These are foremost Georgia, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. The South States, as you know, were the ones who were in favor of slavery and where most slave-intensive labor were due to the huge cotton and sugar cane plantations. Southern Gothic is a genre of literature given to the literary pieces taking their theme from the American South. Special note if your are running AppleWirelessKeyboard Now you can fire up this script using AHK. Should you prefer to run the script instead, for example if you need to customize the behavior, you first need to download and install AutoHotKey. If you want it to auto-start with Windows (which I suppose you would) you need to create a shortcut in your Start Menu/Startup folder. Simply run this application and the new keyboard shortcuts will be in effect. The easiest method is to download the binary from the project page. And unlike AWK (see below) these media keys works with all applications, like Spotify, and not only iTunes. Use the Cmd key + any of the F7-F12 keys to control media playback. This script also enables the media keys (previous track, play/pause, next track and volume buttons). Cmd ⌘ + Shift ⇧ + Alt ⋜ + Arrow key ←↑→↓ – Snaps current window to any of the four edges of the screen (works as the default Win + Arrow key feature in Windows). There is also a HyperDock kind-of special key-combo (both to mimic the same behavior as HyperDock on Mac but also to make up for the Cmd + Left/Right Arrow being mapped as Home/End instead of it’s default Windows behavior). Unfortunately I haven’t found a solid replacement for Alt + Tab (which still causing some frustration for me). Alt ⋜ + 8/9 – Square brackets (or curly brackets with the Shift modifier key).Cmd ⌘ + F10/F11/F12 – Volume control (Mute, Lower volume, Raise volume).Cmd ⌘ + F7/F8/F9 – Media keys (Previous track, Play/pause, Next track).
Epic, across the board. We sampled a couple different margaritas, as well as a couple cocktails including the Highball Perfecto, which might be the best drink I've had in a long, long time. The Boca Resort was arguably never better than with its side dishes, and the same excellence exists here we had the amazing Cesar salad could eat it forever and the waffle fries are tremendous), and I will return for every other one, soon enough.Oh and the drinks. I hope they work out the kinks, I know this place is run by a group whose restaurants I have enjoyed very much in other locations. Service was fine until dessert, when I had to ask a waiter from another table to get the coffee I ordered after dessert was on the table and almost gone after 10-15 mins. Creamed Brussel Sprouts were a good riff on creamed spinach. Lamb Chops were horribly butchered, fatty, and maybe had one solid bite of meat on each of the 3 chops. Appetizers of Broiled Oysters, Tuna Crudo and Stone crab claws were easily the highlights. They make a nice stiff vodka tonic, good wine list. Nothing great, nothing horrible, just average all around.Place is beautiful, folks are super nice that work there, view and atmosphere on the patio was great. unfortunately that describes the dinner we had there last Sat night.
